Being sick stinks! There I’ve said it. It’s hard enough to be the healthy person who usually takes care of everyone he/she loves who is “under the weather” but when it happens to you it can be the worst feeling in the world. I’m not sure what I have. A bad cold for sure with some aches and pains thrown in for good measure! Let’s just say that I have been feeling a little crappy for almost a week which is why I haven’t been blogging. I feel like I lost an entire week and that is really annoying!
Believe me, I’ve thought of tons of different things I wanted to write about all week but didn’t have the energy to get up and sit at my computer. Since you’re reading this you might be thinking I’m doing a little better . . . sadly, not really. But what did change was the “dusting off” of my old laptop. The reason I didn’t use it sooner was simple (a little pathetic but simple): I couldn’t find the power cord. It took me a few days to poke around all my old travel bags until I found it and now that I have, I’m back in business!
So today’s post will be a little potpourri of this week’s random thoughts!
First I’d like to share with you some great tips I discovered this week. I read a lot of magazines this week and learned a few things. For instance:
- Energizer may make the best lithium batteries on the market BUT their MAX Alkaline batteries were rated very poorly. Panasonic and Costco’s brand Kirkland performed better! For a name brand, Duracell Ultra Advanced also performed quite well!
- Pomegranate Juice is not as wonderful as it claims. The Federal Trade Commission recently filed complaints against the makers of POM charging that they made false claims about their products treating and preventing heart disease, prostate cancer, and others issues. Stay tuned!
- If you’re looking for less expensive ways to clean your jewelry, try these tips: plain gold jewelry and pieces with diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and amethyst can be soaked in mild dishwashing liquid and warm water. For dirt that is caught in settings, use a soft toothbrush to clean it out. NEVER USE WATER on pearls, opals or turquoise. Instead, buff them with a soft, chamois cloth. For silver, try a little non-gel toothpaste.
I also enjoy participating in the Writer’s Workshop on Thursdays so I was really bummed when I was too sick to participate on the hop. Still, I had some thoughts for one of the prompts:
3.) Describe a time when you felt left out.
I have always felt connected to people. I’ve been blessed to have good friends in my life for as long as I can remember. I have a wonderful, loving husband and two amazing sons. My life is good. So, you might wonder what it was about THIS prompt that grabbed my attention. I suppose it was because I had to REALLY think about it. (Which is a GOOD thing!) It’s not a feeling I have often BUT I do remember a time not too long ago when I did feel left out.
Ever since I became engaged to my husband, I learned about his annual tradition of a father-son bonding trip. He and his older brother would take a trip with their dad to some place for a long weekend and watch sporting events. I thought it was a really great tradition and was happy for them. I didn’t feel left out at all – I had NO INTEREST in joining them. A few years into our marriage we had our first child – a wonderful boy we named Brett. Twenty months later we had our second (and last) child – another wonderful boy we named Dylan. My brother-in-law also has a son. When the kids were young I had some wonderful weekends with the boys while their Dad went off on his annual bonding trip. Until one year . . .
Yes, you can guess what’s next. The three young boys had grown up and were now OLD enough to join their dads and grandfather on the big weekend trip to Boston for basketball, hockey, and football! They were all so thrilled and, while I was happy for them, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to feeling completely left out. My mom had passed away a few years earlier and I had no daughter of my own to go away with. That weekend was a tough one for me and I was mad at myself for feeling that way. If they didn’t go on the trip because I was feeling left out, I would have felt worse. After all I really did and still do think it’s a wonderful tradition. I’ve come to understand that while the feeling of being left out can really hurt, it hurts less if you understand that it’s not personal.

Finally, my FRIDAY FLIP-OFFS:
To Mother Nature . . . FLIP OFF! I can’t take any more of this snow! Seriously!!! Twenty inches in December and three feet just in January. I have no where left to put it! No more, please!!
To the driver who didn’t stop when my son was walking in the road to get onto his bus . . . FLIP OFF! The bus stop is buried under four feet of snow and there are no more sidewalks. When the yellow bus has stopped, you’re supposed to hit the break and stop driving. You almost hit my kid you nut! And then when you realized your mistake you stopped IN FRONT OF THE BUS! Now you blocked the bus so you still have to continue driving! ARGH!!!
To those rotten germs that are getting everyone sick . . . FLIP OFF! We are all sick and tired of being, well, SICK and TIRED! Just go away!
That’s all for now peeps! Thanks for tuning in as always! -- Dawn
