Don't Be Left Out of the Picture

Are you camera shy?  Do you raise your hand to block friends and family from taking your photo?  Do you turn your head away during group photos? Do you simply refuse to be photographed?  For a lot of you I imagine the answer is yes.  The question is why.  Sadly too many of us struggle with image issues.  We simply aren’t happy with the way we look right now and we tell ourselves that we will get in the picture “the next time” when we’ve lost some weight, toned up, etc.  I’m here to tell you why you should SMILE the next time the camera focuses on you. 

 

As many of you know, I love making scrapbooks.  After the recent passing of my dad, I decided to begin a scrapbook that focused on all the people I’ve loved and lost.  At first I thought this would be the easiest album to create – after all I have hundreds of photos.  When I took a closer look at the photos; however, there was one thing that jumped out at me.  While there were loads of photos to sort through, most of subjects in the photos were of children – my kids, my nieces and nephews, cousins, even myself and my brother as children.  Unfortunately the photos of my loved ones taken during their adulthood were much more elusive.  Sure there were the obligatory “portraits” but not nearly enough candid shots. 

 

I can remember days when both of my parents asked me not to take their photo because they didn’t like the way they looked.  My beloved Aunt was the same way.  Being the persistent gal that I am, I would often badger them just enough to let me take one or two photos.  They weren’t too happy about it and often asked me not to show them to anyone else.  Sadly all three of them have passed away.  I am thankful for the few photos that I do have.  I know that they were afraid that future generations would see their photos and think “Wow, she was really fat then” or “Geez, he really let himself go” but the reality is that all WE (the survivors) see are their beautiful smiles, the twinkle in their eyes, and their love of life.  For them and too many others I’ve loved in my life, “the next time” to take that photo never happened.  None of us truly knows if there will ever be a next time, and certainly “the next time” can’t re-create the same moment in time.

 

Believe me when I tell you that no one is examining photos of you the way you think.  The people who love you see your spirit, your sense of humor, your compassion – in essence they see your soul.  When someone wants to take your photo, it’s not meant to embarrass you but rather to celebrate you. 

 

I used to be camera shy myself many years ago.  I loved taking photos and it was also my excuse for not having to be in the photos -- especially when my weight was at its worst (I've yo-yo'd for years!). Then one day I was working on a project that had me looking for photos taken during a "heavier period" in my life.  I was sad to find few photos to choose from and even more surprised that the photos I did find didn't seem so AWFUL anymore.  I was reminded of some really fun times and the fact that I was heavier ... well, I was.  So what? It was at that moment that I started handing the camera over to others so that I could be "captured" on film once again!

 

Everyone I know loves to look at photos of others.  Whether in a scrapbook, an album, a shoebox, or digitally on the internet, we feel more connected to our friends and loved ones when we can peek into their lives and share their happiness.  Staying out of the picture simply denies them this opportunity.

 

I would hate for any one of you to be left out. Let your friends and family celebrate your life WITH you and ensure that future generations won’t ever forget you.  So the next time you see the camera pointing your way, keep in mind that it’s really a compliment.  It’s someone’s way of saying “You’re important to me.”  Don’t forget to say cheese!

 

REMEMBER:  TODAY IS A GIFT.  THAT’S WHY THEY CALL IT THE PRESENT!

Creating a New "Normal"

"I hope things get back to normal soon."  That's what a friend said to me recently after my father passed away from cancer.  I appreciated the sentiment which had been echoed by others before her earlier in the week.  Strangly her words stayed with me for hours after. It got me thinking:  what does back to normal mean?   What is normal for that matter?

According to the dictionary, normal is defined as:

The usual, average, or typical state or condition.

Most of us go through life doing the same thing day after day. Going to work, running errands, taking care of our families, etc.    It's our "normal" day-to-day routine, right?  The question is . . . when life throws us a curve ball, can we ever REALLY get back to normal?  Perhaps, but not THAT version of normal. We need to create a new normal for ourselves.

Think about it for a moment.  Whenever there has been a significant change in your life, for better or worse, your life changes.  Whatever was considered "normal" to you before, will never be that way again.  

Perhaps it was when you first fell in love.  Your version of normal before meeting that "love of your life" probably didn't involve you speaking/texting/chatting with that person for hours on end.  Your version of normal was altered. You literally created a new "normal" for yourself while you were in that relationship.   If that same person broke your heart, your version of normal probably changed again.

Starting new schools, moving to a new town, making and losing friends, having children, adding a pet to the family, dealing with health issues and even losing those we love are all factors that force us to create a new normal.  It's not something that we consciously choose to do -- it just happens.

I've had a lot of ups and downs in 2012 -- Quite a few health issues and the additon of a new puppy. Each time I found myself making more permanant changes to my life.  With the passing my of dad I am once again creating a new normal - one without him in it.  And while things won't truly get "back to normal", I am curious to see what this new normal will be like!

For those of you who are also facing an "alternate route" on your life's path, remind yourself that this probably isn't the first time a signicant event changed what's "normal" for you and it won't be the last.  Things will never be exactly like they were before but it doesn't mean your new normal can't be wonderful.  

I certainly hope so.

Coming face-to-face with my new baggage

It has been a while since my last post. Last month I discovered that I had Lynch Syndrome which places me at an increased risk for about a dozen cancers. After meeting with my team of doctors, I decided to have the (strongly) recommended prophylactic hysterectomy and oophorectomy in order to eliminate my chances of ever getting uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancers. Considering my odds, the choice seemed simple but nothing ever truly is. Like most procedure, mine would have its own baggage. Obvious ones like initial pain, soreness, and the need to take it easy for 6 weeks were not unexpected. Not being able to sleep on my tummy for a while would be annoying but i could be patient

My surgery was nearly two weeks ago and I'm slowly getting better each day. The worst baggage for me was being told that at the age of 44 I would go into menopause. I was also warned that because my menopause was brought on surgically, it would be immediate. Due to the Lynch Syndrome, my doctors agreed that I would not be a Good candidate for hormone replacement therapy.

So I've been waiting for it. Would I know when it started? Would I have mood swings? Get hot flashes or cold flashes? I thought it started last week. I felt a little warm for a few minutes. Perhaps my menopause would be mild. I had asked friends to describe it. Most just said I'd feel really uncomfortable for brief periods. I even asked my doctor how I would know when it started. I remember her touching my hand and assuring me that I would "just know."

Last night I was pretty exhausted and was looking forward to a good night's rest. My incisions are healing nicely so now I can comfortably sleep on my side. Unfortunately my hormones had other plans. I will admit that last night's experience threw me for a loop. For me, menopause was more than "really uncomfortable." This is how I came face-to-face with my Lynch Syndrome baggage:

 

The doctor told me I would be in menopause

And I nodded my head in acknowledgement

But what did this mean?

would I even know?

"one day" she said, "you just will"

And so I waited ...

 

I was completely exhausted as I settled into bed

Hoping for a good night's sleep

When suddenly I felt it's presence

It's warm breath at first

Whispered in my ears

Then like a desert storm

It's intense heat coursed through my veins

Sending me to a tropical hell

I languished with my blanket

Kicking it off like a petulant child

in the throws of a mad tantrum

I reached for my coolest pillow

In hopes that this fiery dragon would soon be slayed

An hour ticked by sluggishly

But soon I would rest ...

 

... Or would I?

A few hours later I was jolted from my slumber

The chill of Arctic air now pulsing inside me

 I tossed the chilly pillow to the floor

And grasped for a heated blanket and comforter 

To envelop me

I laid shivering in the bed

My mind transporting me to a dark winter's night

When an icy nor'easter had knocked out the heat

I once again watched the clock

Waiting for this frosty demon to leave

Two hours ticked by as I felt myself thaw

Now I could rest ...

 

... Or could I?

As the sun rose I awoke once again

 Feeling as if I had just been baking in my kitchen 

Inside me, the gush of warm oven-like air 

flowed softly from head to toe

Before quietly fading away

And now I knew

 

This is menopause 

 

 

 

I hope it doesn't last for long but no one really knows for sure. At least now I know what to expect. And, even though it pretty much SUCKS to have to deal with it many years earlier than is typical, the alternative (not having the surgery and waiting for a probable cancer) still seems worse.

I am a cancer PREVIVOR

LYNCH SYNDROME.  Two words that have changed my world forever. 

 

Tomorrow is Lynch Syndrome Hereditary Cancer Public Awareness Day.  It is believed that nearly 600,000 Americans have Lynch Syndrome, YET only 5% have been diagnosed. 

Until recently I had never heard of it, so knowing how few people have been diagnosed doesn’t really surprise me.  I knew my family had a strong history of cancer and it seemed like my grandma’s side of the family was a giant cancer magnet.  Now at least I understand why.

 

So what is Lynch syndrome?  Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is caused by a genetic mutation.  It is passed down from generation to generation. People with Lynch syndrome have up to an 85% chance of contracting colorectal cancer by age 70 as well as an up to 70% chance of contracting endometrial cancer. Carriers are also at a much higher than average risk of contracting various cancers including ovarian cancer, cancer of the gastrointestinal organs, cancers of the kidney/urinary tract, brain, pancreas, and breast.

A few years ago, my beloved Aunt Nanci passed away from colon cancer.  It was not her first battle with cancer (she had ovarian and breast cancer as well) but sadly it was her last.  At my cousin’s urging, she agreed to participate in a genetic research study (due to her personal cancer history as well as the strong cancer history in her family.  At the time she was losing her battle with colon cancer, other cancer-surviving relatives (including my dad) were asked to participate in the study but they all declined for various personal reasons – most said they just “didn’t want to know.”  Tests completed AFTER she died showed that she did in fact have a genetic mutation called Lynch syndrome. 

Two months ago my father was diagnosed with cancer for the 4^th time. Although NONE of his cancers were the same as his sister, his mother also had many cancers, and ALL of their cancers could be linked to the family of Lynch syndrome cancers.  Since he also had aunts, an uncle, and first cousins with Lynch syndrome related cancers, and since his sister’s colon cancer had tested positive for the genetic mutation, his doctor strongly recommended that he get tested as well.   I asked him to do it for me, my brother and our kids and he finally agreed. Last month his results came back positive for the mutation.  

His positive result meant that I now had a 50/50 chance of inheriting this mutation.  I took the test in early March and just received my results – POSITIVE. 

 So, what does that mean for me?  At the moment I am pretty healthy.  I feel fine for 44 and I can’t imagine getting cancer.  Yet, according to the genetics counselor I am a cancer PREVIVOR.

 

What is a previvor, you ask? It’s someone like me.  Someone who hasn’t yet had cancer but who is so highly predisposed that it’s more likely than not I will get it. It’s someone who is taking steps to minimize the risk of cancer, someone who is taking her health into her own hands. It’s being proactive. It’s not surviving, but previving. 

I’m not going to pretend that I’m not overwhelmed, frustrated, and yes, a little scared.  Heck, how could I not be after seeing those odds!  Still, I will do what I need to do.  I will endure yearly screenings I could never have imagined someone my age volunteering to do.  I will undergo preventive surgery next month to significantly decrease my chances of getting a few of the cancers.  I will change my eating habits and try to get fit.  I will do whatever is necessary so that the odds are in my favor.

I read somewhere that “a bend in the road is not the end of the road UNLESS you fail to make the turn.”  I intend on staying on this road a very long time.

I am so thankful for all my friends and family who have been so incredibly supportive since I got the news.  I’m also thankful for my new “team” of doctors, several who are just now learning about Lynch syndrome themselves, and are working together to give me the best chances for a long life.  And finally I am thankful for my incredible husband Mark and my two sons who remind me every day why this life’s worth fighting for. 

Tomorrow I will be wearing my jeans as a reminder for anyone who might be at risk to screen their genes.   It is my hope that the other 95% of Lynch Syndrome carriers will eventually get tested so that they can also “stack the deck” against cancer!

Scrapping My Way Down Memory Lane . . .

This weekend I had the opportunity to get away from the family and surround myself with dozens of inspiring gals at a scrapbooking retreat in Mystic, Connecticut.  This one was hosted by Scrap-a-way Retreats.  I have attended several different retreats over the years including Croppers Delight and Crop Classix, and have enjoyed them all.  Retreats are usually 3 day CROPS.

Whether or not you're a scrapper, you might wonder whether or not someone could really work on scrapbooking pages for three days straight.  The answer is an easy one -- absolutely.  In fact, I barely sleep at these events.  There is always good food, a little shopping, games to be played, etc but, like most people, I attend crops to get work done.  There are no usual distractions -- no laundry, no errands, no one needing me to do anything for them.  The meals are prepared for me, drinks are always available and everyone is pretty friendly and ready to give a second opinion if I want one.

Scrappers all have different methods to their madness and everyone seems to be working on different projects so you can get lots of ideas.  There are typically two kinds of scrapbook albums -- the first ones are specific to an event (wedding, vacation, etc) and the others are the day-to-day LIFE albums (what most photos are!).  Most scrappers try to do their pages in chronological order but NOT ME.  I like to scrap pages as they inspire me so I divide my albums into themes:  People We Love, Places We Go, Things We Do, Celebrations, Sports, and Just Because.  

No matter how many scrapbooks pages I've done, I am no where close to being "caught up" and I'm really okay with that.  For this retreat I just opened a bunch of shoeboxes where I have thousands (honestly) of photos stashed and grabbed pictures from all different years.  The result was a weekend trip down memory lane.  Each page I did brought back some wonderful memories for me and, I hope, will evoke the same emotions for the people in them.

Why is it so Expensive to be Healthy?

Why is it so expensive to eat healthy foods?  That was the big question I asked this week as I got started on the “road to a healthier 2012.”  With holiday feasts behind me, I thought I would begin my quest for better living with a trip to Whole Foods. 

A new store recently opened in my town and seemed to beckon me.  Mark and the kids joined me (the kids didn’t really have a choice) for a trip to the market and we definitely had no problem filling our cart.  The fruits and veggies looked delicious, the kids were thrilled to grind their own peanut butter, we bought fresh seafood, dairy, etc. 

Everything seemed to be looking up until we reached the register.  OUCH!  

 

Mentally, I had some idea of what I spent every week on groceries.  This bill was almost double that and I hadn’t made a visit to my regular grocery store (Stop & Shop) for all the stuff Whole Foods doesn’t carry.  At this rate, a healthier lifestyle for the family will nearly double our monthly food expenses compared to last year.  The question I have is . . . WHY?

 

Personally, I blame Uncle Sam.  As a society, Americans are overweight.  It’s a fact.  And, while our government is not force feeding us junk food, they are certainly making it much more attractive.  Have you ever wondered what our government is paying you to eat?  The top 3 products that are subsidized are corn, wheat, and soybeans-- three major components in processed “unhealthy” foods.  By doing so, all this junk food becomes cheaper and in this economy, cheaper foods are almost always more appealing.  Rice and Beer round out the top 5.  

 

Now I'm not saying we should stop subsidizing foods (I'm in full support of American farmers) but, with the rates of obesity rising each year, don't you think our government should figure out a way to make ALL FOODS a little more affordable?

 

 

 

Hello 2012!

Hello 2012!  It’s hard to believe that a new year has begun once again.  2011 was a roller coaster year for me. Like most of you, my year had its ups and downs.  I had some high high-points (traveling to Africa on safari is probably at the TOP) and some low low-points (dealing with my dad’s cancer and preparing him for life in a nursing home would be at the BOTTOM).  Still at the close of 2011 I was surrounded by my family and was reminded that

 

So what things are in store for me this coming year?  Hmmm . .. some more highs and lows and plenty of good stuff in the middle I imagine.  Here’s a bit of what I do know:

 

• Sadly my dad had to make the decision to give up his apartment last month and move into a long-term care facility due to complications from his parkinson’s disease.  This January will be a tough month for me as I’ll be handling most of the details for the move.   On a positive note, he will only be 2 miles from my house so I’ll be able to see him more often and I can sleep easier knowing he’s being well cared for. 

 

• My kids are getting bigger and growing up faster than I ever imagined.  My big guy is already a high school sophomore and the little one (who is the tallest in the family) is a high school freshman.  My mailbox is no longer just cluttered with just bills and catalogs but rather with college brochures and solicitations for college prep courses.  Let the stress of the “thinking about college” begin!
  

 

• And speaking of stress . . . my oldest will be getting both his permit and driver’s license in 2012.  This is definitely a good thing, right?  
   

• As far as traveling goes . . . you KNOW I’ll be heading somewhere.  
  So far I have two trips planned.  Once this Spring to Savannah, GA to see my cousins and dear college friend Kelly.  I’ve never been there and can’t wait!  I’m also going on a girls’ getaway to DC this summer.  I’ve done the relaxing getaways, the adventurous getaways, and now a big cultural & educational getaway (with plenty of wine involved!).   Mark and I will also be vacationing somewhere this summer but I’m not sure where just yet!

 

• And speaking of my hubby, I am looking forward to our new “date nights” for 2012.  Twice a month we will be going out WITHOUT THE KIDS.  We will each plan one of the dates and try to keep it fun! 
  
  The kids were already told that we will “not be available” to drive them around on our date nights.  Now that they’re both in high school it seems fair that “mom and dad” can go out and have some fun too.

 

• And if I’m going out . . . whether it’s a local date or a fabulous vacation,  I imagine my camera will not be too far behind.  This of course means there will be plenty of scrapbooking in 2012 too!  I am looking forward to spending time with my scrapping buddy Shannon later this month at a weekend crop in Mystic, CT. 
  
  Throughout 2012 I look forward to spending a lot of time attempting to catch up on my scrapbooks!  I love my scrappy family (you know who you are!!!) and can’t wait to see all of you this year!

 

• Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas took up so much of everyone's time that I haven't had my FIX of female bonding in a couple of months.  
  I am looking forward to my monthly book group and weekly mah jongg games.  Being the only gal in a family of guys, I really look forward to my GIRL TIME!  

 

So that’s my sneak peek into 2012.  Dad, kids, hubby, travel, photography, scrapping, friends.  Oh yeah, and one more thing . . . blogging.  I’ve missed it and look forward to connecting with many of you again this year!

 

Advice for Living A Full Life

My youngest son started high school this Fall. Now with a freshman and sophomore in my midst, I am constantly reminded of their impending adulthood. Talk about "their future" is no longer this abstract topic that used to come up from time to time while building block towers or sipping cocoa. What do they want to be when they grow up?  What advice should I be giving them to help ensure they follow a path toward a happy life?

I recently came across a column written by Mary Schmich (Chicago Tribune) some 14 years ago. In it, she suggests that every adult should write down the advice they might give if ever asked to give a commencement speech. While I have not completed mine just yet, I wanted to share her wonderful advice with all of you. Will my children or my younger readers "get this"? I hope so. For the rest of you, I hope you enjoy this free advice and always remember to wear sunscreen!

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life, to young people who'd rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there's no reason we cant entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.

I encourge anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt. Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Girls Safari 2011 - My BIG Adventure: THE FINAL CHAPTER

 LAKE NAKURU

We had an incredible afternoon drive in Lake Nakuru before we checked into our next lodge.  Evidence of Africa’s drought was everywhere from Nairobi to Amboseli; however, Lake Nakuru’s area seems to be unaffected.  The grass was tall and a vibrant green, the foliage full.  In many areas it seemed like we were more in a jungle than a savannah.  Immediately upon entering this national park we saw an abundance of wildlife.  

 

 

Of course no trip to Lake Nakuru would be complete without actually visiting the lake and, we were surprised to find out, was the one area where visitors are allowed OUT of the safari vans.  From a distance, the lake looks like it is tinged with pink -- upon closer inspection you realize that it is simply filled with flamingos.  There were so many that my camera lens could barely capture them all.  The pelicans seemed to enjoy the lake as well.  Of course getting a closer look at these creatures meant walking through some pretty muddy grasslands.  I was quite thankful to be wearing my boots that day!

 

A huge heard of buffalo were close by and didn’t seemed phased at all by the many visitors.  

We drove to a high point in the park and were able to look down at the lake -- what a view!  Right next to us was a large family of baboons who didn't seem to mind the company.  We even saw a few hyraxes scurrying along!

 

 

At the end of the day we started back toward the lodge when Lawrence (our driver) got a tip that a python was sighted.  He had only seen one ONCE and decided we were going back to the lake area to try to find it.  Of course it started to rain at that point and the dirt roads were getting harder to pass.  If I’m being honest, there were a couple of times that I thought we might get stuck in the water - not a great feeling when you realize there’s a python out there!  Sadly we didn’t find it but it did make for an interesting story!

Our accommodations for the evening for quite comfortable.  We stayed at the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge for one night.  The food was pretty good compared to our other hotel and the room was a little more spacious!  

In the early morning we had one more safari drive -- alas the python eluded us again!  We did see some other pretty incredible creatures though.  I was THRILLED to finally see lions!  The fact that they were relaxing right next to the road made it even sweeter!!

After the game drive, we strapped in for our next LONG drive -- this time to Masai Mara. The six hour drive had us pass many shacks and homes along the way.  We saw many adults and children walking along the road - many waving to us as we passed.  There were many goats and some thin cattle.  Every now and then we’d even see a gazelle waltzing by.  Although many of the children smiled at us as we passed by, we couldn’t help but feel terrible when we saw the extreme poverty conditions they were living in.  

 

We stopped along the way, once again, for a picnic lunch (although this one wasn’t as good as the last one!) At least there was some good shopping.  As we “neared” Masai Mara, Lawrence warned us that the road would be a little bumpy.  We thought we had already been on some very bumpy roads so we weren’t quite sure what to think of his first “warning.”  We learned quickly enough!  It is apparent that the road to this park has not been paved since the British left Kenya back in the 60s.  There were so many pot holes in the road that there was hardly any road to drive on!  I kid you not, we often drove off the main road and onto dirt roads so that we could bypass as much of the paved areas as possible.  It took us about an hour to finally reach the main entrance to the park and I , for one, was extremely grateful for sports bras at this point!

 

Masai Mara is the park that you usually hear about on those Animal Planet shows.  It has more wildlife than most, if not all, of the other parks in Kenya.  We arrived in time for an afternoon game drive and, once again, the animals did NOT disappoint!

Our accommodations for our first night in Masai Mara was at the Mara Sarova Game Camp.  Unlike the other places we stayed, this was not a traditional room, but rather a tent.  A large comfortable tent with electricity and a full bathroom, but, nevertheless, a tent.  In case we got forgot we were sleeping in a tent, the sound of a shrieking bird at 2am reminded us where we were. 

 

We had asked for an 4:45am wake-up call since we were leaving early in the morning for our hot air balloon safari. One problem -- there are NO PHONES in the tents.  Still, we got our wake-up call -- a gentleman stood outside our tent (on the porch) and shouted to us to make sure we were up!

So in the dark wee hours of the morning, we (and about 8 other tourists) boarded a van that took us on a 45 minute ride to another lodge where we filled out some papers and, yet again, boarded another van (with even more tourists!) which took us on a much shorter drive to the balloon landing area.

We watched as they inflated the balloons.  

 

The Captain (Roy) then asked each of us to CLIMB over the basket wall to get inside.  We were packed in there pretty tightly, but once up in the air no one seemed to mind as much!  The view was amazing!  One of the coolest things was seeing the hundreds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras making their annual migration to Tanzania.  

 

After the balloon landed we all enjoyed a champagne brunch in the bush!  It was the icing on the cake!

Once we returned to our hotel we had time for an early lunch and then a wonderful afternoon safari.  Once again we were treated to the sights of some incredible animals!

 

Our next hotel in Masai Mara (where we spent two nights) was at the Mara Serena Safari Lodge. OMG!  This lodge had spectacular views.  We opened the doors to our balcony and saw a bushbuck less than 8 feet away.  We saw warthogs wandering close by, and a family of baboons as well.  Off in the distance we could see herds of elephants and giraffes walking across the savannah. 

Everything about this lodge was wonderful . . . except for the many steps we had to walk up/down to get to our room.  The lodge was built in a “U” shape (similar to a Masai village). The reception and dining area was in the center which was on the top of his hill.  The rooms went down the hill in both directions and we were pretty far down!  Other than that, we really had no complaints!

 We were lucky enough to have an afternoon safari (the balloon safari wasn’t enough for one day!) and then we had another full day (2 more safari drives) the next day. 

We were able to unwind and relax a bit between the drives.  Sitting by the pool was an nice way to decompress.  

We enjoyed one last morning drive before heading back to Nairobi. 

We were all a little sad to say goodbye to the parks.  Also, none of us was looking forward to another bumpy ride.  This was, by far, the LONGEST drive we would have - it seemed endless.  At one point we were able to stop along the road to say hello to a little boy who had been waving to us.  He was standing by the side of the road tending goats.  He looked to be no older than 7 and was all alone.  We hadn’t seen anyone for a mile or two.  We offered him a piece of fruit and a juice box.  He seemed so excited that we decided to give him ALL of our fruit (we had another 5 pieces in the van!).  We watched as he ran up this dusty hill toward some cattle.  We guessed that the rest of his family was there and we hoped that his family would be thrilled with his “haul!”

 . . . BACK IN NAIROBI

Once back in Nairobi we said our goodbyes to Lawrence and settled in the our room at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.  (it was nice to finally see it during daylight hours!) We were all pretty exhausted that evening and opted for a quiet night in our room featuring beer, wine, and burgers!  

On our final day in Nairobi we met Charles, our driver/guide for the morning and afternoon.  He drove us to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust - an orphanage for elephants (most whom lost their mothers to poachers) and a couple of rhinos.  While hearing the stories of how these animals each became orphaned is heart-breaking, seeing how they interact with their “keepers” (who act as a substitute family) warmed my heart.  

 

Next we visited the Giraffe Center - a sanctuary that is trying to save the lives of the Rothschild giraffes.  They have a successful breeding program there and enjoyed “meeting” several of the residents!

 

Nearby was the home of Karen Blixen (who wrote “Out of Africa”) and we enjoyed a fascinating tour of her home.  In addition to many original artifacts, were pieces of movie memorabilia.  As we toured the home we watched as a lavish wedding reception was taking place on the grounds.

Afterwards we enjoyed a light bite to eat at the Coffee Garden and Restaurant (on the property.) I learned that some of this land was used as a coffee plantation during her life.

 

Our final stop of the day was at a Masai Market.  Once again we were impressed by the beautiful craftsmanship of some of these pieces.  Wood carvings, beaded boxes and bowls, and sculpted sandstone pieces seem to be the most popular items.  

At the airport we had a few hours to kill but, luckily, it was a lot nicer than Rome’s airport.  There was ample shopping (needed to get rid of every last shilling!) and enough food to eat and drink.  We met a few interesting people while we waited.  First an Angolan man tried to convince Meredith to sponsor him so he could come to America and get a job.  We also met a young Englishman (college-aged) who was returning home after a month in Tanzania and Zambia on his own. We traded some of our funnier stories and it certainly made the time waiting pass more quickly.

 

Luckily our evening flight on Kenya Airways from Nairobi to London was relatively uneventful.  Our flight home on Delta Airways from London to NYC was a little nuttier.  Once again we were on a full flight and the flight attendants were a bit nasty to some of the passengers.  It definitely makes you see why some foreigners say Americans can act “ugly.”  The attendants were rude and it made many of the passengers uncomfortable.  Once we landed we had to wait a VERY LONG TIME to get our luggage -- but once it did I headed straight home and tried desperately NOT to fall asleep so that I wouldn’t be too jet-lagged the next day.

 

So now I’ve been home a little less than two weeks.  I must admit . . . I do miss Africa.  Somehow seeing a deer grazing on the side of the road just doesn’t hold the same allure anymore!

 

 

Girls Safari 2011 - My BIG Adventure PART THREE

 . . .AMBOSELI (continued)

Over the next two days we had three more safari drives.  Each animal was more captivating than the next.  We were all so amazed that the wildlife didn't fear the safari vans (even when several surounded them).  In fact many of them looked us right in the eyes, curiously checking us out as much as we looked at them. Below are a few more photos I snapped at this incredible spot:

 
During our visit to Amboseli, we were able to visit a Masai Village. We were greeted by "Henry" (the Kenyans all seem to have a Christian name that tourists can pronounce) who explained that he was the son of the Chief and would give us a tour of his village.  

We walked passed thorny branches which he explained was their fencing - used to protect the village during the night from predators.  The villagers were all lined up to greet us with a welcome song and dance!

Their homes, we learned, are made from dried grass and dried cow dung.  There are two small holes in each that are the windows and there is a small entrance.  We toured inside of one home-- it was sooo dark at first.  We sat on beds that had cow hide to sit on.  

We watched them as they made fire using a hard and soft wood.  

Later we met the son of the medicine man who explained the different plants they use to combat everything from maleria to erectile dysfunction!  

After our tour, we visited their market to shop, and finally visited their pre-school where we were allowed to give the children gifts we had brought from home.  

We had snacks, balloons, crayons and paper!  The children were friendly and happy to sing for us!  We were treated to another song by the tribe as we departed!

We loved our stay in Amboseli and were a little sad to leave the lodge (and all the adorable monkeys too!  

 

 
Still we were excited about heading to our next destination:  Lake Nakuru . . .only six hours away!

 

. . . ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

On the way to Lake Nakuru we stopped for a picnic lunch along the Great Rift Valley.  This is a valley that stretches over 6,000 from Israel to Mozambique.  It was truly breath-taking!

We weren't sure what to expect from a picnic lunch but we figured that after the EAT and SHOP, things could only get better!  Our lunch was more than enough - Barbequed chicken, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, yogurt, water, juice, and two small sandwiches.  

We did a little shopping here as well before heading to Lake Nakuru National Park - in time for an afternoon drive!
